"Use your words." "Take a deep breath." "Calm down." Every parent has said some version of this during a meltdown — and every parent has watched it fail spectacularly. This isn't because the advice is wrong exactly. It's because it's aimed at the wrong part of the brain.
To truly help a child through big feelings, it helps to understand what is actually happening inside their head in that moment — not metaphorically, but neurologically.
The amygdala takes over
Deep in the brain sits the amygdala — the brain's alarm system. Its job is to detect threat and trigger an immediate protective response: fight, flight, or freeze. It is fast, primitive, and does not wait for permission.
The brain's "thinking" centre — the prefrontal cortex — sits just behind the forehead. This is where reasoning, impulse control, perspective-taking, and language live. It is also, crucially, the last part of the brain to fully develop, continuing to mature well into a person's mid-twenties.
During an emotional flood, the amygdala effectively hijacks the system, and blood flow and activity shift away from the prefrontal cortex. Asking a dysregulated child to "use their words" is neurologically similar to asking someone to solve a maths problem while an alarm blares in their ear. The part of the brain that processes language and logic is temporarily offline. This is not defiance — it is biology.
Why school makes this harder
Classrooms and school days demand an enormous amount from the prefrontal cortex: sitting still, following multi-step instructions, managing peer conflict, tolerating frustration over a difficult worksheet, waiting one's turn. For a child whose regulation skills are still developing, a full school day can be genuinely exhausting — even before anything "goes wrong."
Peer dynamics add another layer. Social exclusion, a perceived slight from a friend, or the fear of embarrassment in front of classmates can trigger a threat response every bit as real, neurologically, as physical danger. A child who "overreacts" to being left out of a game is often not overreacting at all — their alarm system is responding exactly as it's designed to.
Three strategies for co-regulation
Because a dysregulated child's thinking brain is offline, the most effective first step is never a conversation. It's co-regulation — borrowing your own calm nervous system to help settle theirs.
1. Regulate yourself first
Children's nervous systems are remarkably attuned to the adults around them. Before attempting to help your child calm down, take a breath yourself and consciously lower your own volume, pace, and tension. A dysregulated parent cannot co-regulate a dysregulated child — you will only be adding a second alarm to the room.
2. Name it, don't explain it
Skip the questions ("why are you so upset?") and skip the logic ("it's not a big deal"). Instead, simply reflect what you observe: "You are really angry right now." This signals safety without demanding the very cognitive skills that are temporarily unavailable. Save the explaining and problem-solving for after the storm passes — never during it.
3. Offer your body before your words
Physical presence — sitting nearby, a hand on the back, simply staying in the room without pressure to talk — often does more to bring the amygdala back down than any sentence could. Once you see the body begin to settle (breathing slows, shoulders drop), that is your cue that the prefrontal cortex is coming back online, and a real conversation becomes possible.
A reframe worth holding onto: A meltdown is not a behaviour problem to be corrected. It is a nervous system asking for help regulating — and every time you co-regulate with your child instead of demanding they self-regulate alone, you are literally helping build the neural pathways that will make self-regulation possible over time.
